Asked on every Bocas forum, every week

"How much should a water taxi to Carenero cost? The guy at the dock said $5 each and I think we got tourist-priced. What do locals pay, and does it change at night?"

Water taxis in Bocas del Toro do not run on a meter, and the fare you are quoted depends on how many people are waiting, the time of day, the weather and whether the captain is heading that way anyway. The table below is the range locals and long-term residents pay from the Bocas Town docks. Confirm the fare before you step on the boat, in Spanish if you can, and you will almost always get the normal rate.

How the fares work

Per person, not per boat. Shared water taxis charge per head and leave when there are a few passengers. A private run for one or two people costs more, so ask "¿por persona o la lancha completa?".
Night runs cost more. After about 7 PM the Carenero and Old Bank shuttles roughly double, and later than 10 PM you are arranging a private boat.
Rain and swell change the price. Outer trips such as Zapatilla are weather dependent; captains cancel or reroute when the sea is up.
Pay in cash, small bills. Captains rarely have change for a $20.

Ask the fare before boarding
Disculpe, capitán, ¿cuánto sale la lancha a Carenero por persona?
"Excuse me captain, how much is the water taxi to Carenero per person?"
Round trip with a pickup time
¡Buenas! ¿Nos puede llevar y recogernos a las cuatro de la tarde? ¿Cuánto sale ida y vuelta?
"Hello! Can you take us and pick us up at 4 PM? How much for the round trip?"
Does the boat still go in the rain?
Disculpe, ¿la lancha sale aunque llueva?
"Excuse me, does the boat still leave if it rains?"
Ask for life jackets
Disculpe, ¿tiene chalecos salvavidas para los niños?
"Excuse me, do you have life jackets for the children?"
Last boat back
Disculpe, ¿a qué hora sale la última lancha de regreso a Bocas Town?
"Excuse me, what time is the last boat back to Bocas Town?"
